MOMENTS OF GRACE
A personal encounter with God

During the past few years I have found myself hospitalised with severe asthma on a number of occasion for lengthy periods of time. It is a frustrating and exhausting experience as the high dosage steroids administered to control the asthma almost negate any possibility of real sleep and, at times, mental equilibrium.

On one occasion, totally exhausted and struggling to get sufficient air to breathe I sensed a moment of resignation, that death would be preferable. However, God always has his hand on you even at the most difficult of situations. On my laptop was a short music video of “It is well with my soul” which I had produced just a couple of weeks earlier to close out our home Bible study.

During that long night I played and replayed the video drinking in deeply its message, particularly the second verse:
My sin—oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!—
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

I always identify with my namesake King David who said his sin was always before him (Psalm 51). And as much as some of us don’t want to be reminded about our sin I am OK with it. If my sin is ever before me the so is the amazingness of God’s grace: and life doesn’t get much better than that. I trust you enjoy “It is well with my soul” as much as I did.
